PPF Material Selection Guide
Choosing the Right Paint Protection Film (PPF)
Before selecting a material, first consider what parts of the car you actually want to protect, how long you plan to keep the vehicle, and what the main purpose of the protection is.
Not every car needs a full wrap, and not every situation requires the most expensive film. The best solution depends on your usage, budget, and expectations.
Below is a practical guide to help you decide.
🎯 Start With the Basics
Before selecting the film type, ask yourself three simple questions:
1. Which parts of the car do you want to protect?
Most drivers don’t need full vehicle coverage. The areas most exposed to stone chips and road debris are the front-facing panels and lower sections.
Typical high-impact protection areas include:
- Front Bumper
- Hood
- Front Fenders
- A-Pillars
- Front section of the roof
- Side mirrors
- Rocker panels (side skirts)
- Trunk loading edge / Luggage Area
2. How long will you keep the car?
The lifespan of the film should roughly match how long you plan to keep the vehicle.
3. What is the main reason for installing PPF?
Typical reasons include:
- Prevent stone chips
- Protect expensive paintwork
- Maintain resale value
- Temporary protection (track days or lease return)
- Achieve a specific finish (matte or gloss)
Once you know your goal, choosing the right film becomes much easier.
🚗 Common Use Cases
🚘 Leased Vehicle (3–5 Years)
If your car is leased, you will likely return it after 3–5 years. Any paint damage at the front of the vehicle can lead to expensive repaint charges when returning the car.
In this situation, a cost-effective Paint Protection Film is usually the best choice.
Protecting the front section and rocker panels is often enough to prevent most lease return damage.
Recommended Film: Oraguard 270
It offers reliable protection against stone chips and road debris at an affordable price.
Installation note:
Oraguard 270 becomes more flexible at slightly warmer temperatures. If your car has strong curves or complex shapes, using a hair dryer or heat gun can help soften the film and make it easier to stretch during installation.
🛞 Track Day or Test Drive Protection
If you are preparing your car for a track day or a weekend on a race track, temporary protection is usually sufficient.
Stone chips are very common on track days, especially on the front bumper and rocker panels.
Recommended coverage:
- Front Bumper
- Hood
- Front Fenders
- Rocker Panels / Side Skirts
If the PPF will be removed shortly after the event, there is no need for an expensive long-term PPF.
The most affordable PPF option is more than enough to protect the paint from stone chips during track use.
🚗 Daily Driver
If you drive your car regularly, the vehicle is constantly exposed to:
- road debris
- stone chips
- UV light
- Bird Poop
- highway stone chips
- sand and salt
- automatic car washes
For mid-range or high-value vehicles, it often makes sense to choose a higher quality film that maintains a perfect finish over time.
Recommended FIlm: Oraguard 2815GF+
Benefits:
- very high gloss finish
- excellent clarity
- self-healing properties
- long durability
This film keeps the paint looking fresh even after years of daily driving.
🏁 Exotic or High-End Cars
For premium vehicles where appearance is critical, optical clarity and self-healing performance become more important.
Recommended Films:
• Oraguard 2815GF+
• Avery Dennison SPF-X3
These films offer:
- extremely clear finish
- excellent durability
- strong resistance to yellowing
- superior self-healing
- Self cleaning effect (Lotus effect - hydrophobic surface)
They are ideal for supercars, collector vehicles, or high-end paint finishes.
🎨 Matte vs Gloss Protection
If your vehicle has a matte wrap or matte paint, you must use a matte protection film.
Applying a glossy film on matte paint would create shiny areas.
Options for matte protection:
• Oraguard 2815MF+
• APA GS/168-KT
These films protect the surface while preserving the matte appearance.
Important note:
If you install matte PPF on a glossy painted car, the protected areas will become matte.
If you want a full matte look on a glossy vehicle, you need to cover the entire car.
🛠️ Installation Difficulty
Some films are easier to install than others.
High-end TPU films such as:
• Oraguard 2815GF+
• Oraguard 2815MF+
• Avery Dennison SPF-X3
are more elastic and easier to stretch, which helps when applying the film on curved panels.
This makes them more forgiving during installation, especially on complex body shapes.
✂️ Pre-Cut Kit Preparation
When ordering high-end films, we weed the parts from the carrier sheet for you.
That means:
- all excess material is removed
- only the actual PPF parts remain
- installation becomes faster and easier
You simply take the parts you need and start installing.
🛡️ TPU vs PVC – Practical Differences
Shared Protection
Both TPU and PVC films protect against:
- stone chips
- road debris
- minor scratches
- environmental contamination
For many everyday applications, both materials provide effective paint protection.
TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)
TPU is the premium PPF material.
Advantages:
- self-healing surface
- long lifespan (5–10 years)
- excellent clarity
- strong resistance to yellowing
Small scratches disappear when exposed to heat from sunlight or warm water.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
PVC Films are more affordable and ideal for:
- short-term protection
- track days
- leased vehicles
- budget-focused installations
They provide solid protection against stone chips while keeping costs low.
