What Is Paint Protection Film (PPF) and How Does It Work?
PPF stands for Paint Protection Film — a clear layer roughly 0.16 mm thick, self-healing in its better grades, that takes the stone chips, scratches and bug etching your paint would otherwise take. Here is how it actually works, what it does not do, and the difference between bulk installation and a pre-cut kit.

1. What is PPF? The 30-second answer
PPF stands for Paint Protection Film. It is a transparent, flexible film — most often thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), but also PVC and other materials — applied over a car’s painted panels. It absorbs the impacts, abrasion and chemical attack that would otherwise reach the clear coat, and because it is a sacrificial layer, it can be replaced. Your paint cannot.
That is the whole idea in one sentence. Everything else — self-healing top coats, TPU versus PVC, bulk versus pre-cut — is detail about how well a given film does that job and how it gets onto the car.
The technology is not new. Clear urethane film was developed for the US military in the 1960s to stop sand and debris from destroying helicopter rotor blades. The automotive version followed in the 1980s — first on the front ends of racing cars, then as the consumer “clear bra” — and modern films are a long way from those first sheets: optically clear, UV-stable, hydrophobic, and — depending on the material — self-healing.
The other names you will see
PPF is sold under a confusing number of names. They all describe the same product:
- Clear bra — the common US term, from the early partial-hood kits that looked like a bra strapped to the front of the car.
- Stone guard film / stone chip film — emphasises the main job.
- Lackschutzfolie or Steinschlagschutzfolie (German), film de protection peinture (French), pellicola protettiva (Italian), lakbeschermingsfolie (Dutch).
- Invisible shield, clear shield, protective film — marketing names used by various manufacturers.
If a shop quotes you for any of the above, they are quoting you for PPF. What actually differs between offers is the film grade and the installation method — the two things this guide spends most of its time on.
2. How PPF works: three layers, three jobs
A modern paint protection film is not one material. It is a laminate, and each layer has a separate job. The description below is the full TPU construction; PVC films follow the same basic idea but without the self-healing top coat.
- The top coat — a thin elastomeric layer on the outside. This is where self-healing, water beading and UV resistance live. It is also what keeps the film from hazing over after a few summers.
- The TPU core — thermoplastic polyurethane, the thickest part of the stack and the reason the film works at all. TPU is elastic: when a stone hits it, the film deforms and spreads that impact energy sideways over a much larger area instead of concentrating it in one point on your clear coat. Then it springs back.
- The adhesive — a pressure-sensitive acrylic layer that flows into the microscopic texture of the paint over the first 24–48 hours. That is why a fresh install can show faint haze or tiny water pockets on day one and look noticeably better by day three.
The film is elastic enough to be wrapped around a panel edge — that flexibility is exactly what lets it absorb an impact instead of cracking.
Put the thickness in perspective
The films we supply are 157–160 µm thick — about 0.16 mm, or roughly 6.3 mil in US units. A car’s factory clear coat is typically only 40–50 µm. In other words, PPF adds a protective layer three to four times thicker than the clear coat it is protecting, and it is far more elastic than that clear coat will ever be.
Honest framing: PPF is energy management, not armour. It reliably stops the chips that motorway driving throws at your bumper and bonnet. It will not stop a stone big enough to dent the panel underneath, and it is not a substitute for insurance.
3. Self-healing: what it fixes and what it doesn’t
This is the feature that sells PPF, and it is genuinely impressive — but it is also the most over-promised part of the product, so here is the honest version.
The top coat of a TPU film is elastomeric. When something light scratches it, the material is displaced rather than removed. Add energy in the form of heat and the polymer relaxes back towards its original shape, and the mark disappears.
What triggers it: heat, and more of it than people assume. A dark panel in strong summer sun often gets there on its own; a light-coloured car, or any car in cool or overcast weather, usually does not. Hot water over the panel helps. A hair dryer or heat gun held at a sensible distance and kept moving will clear a mark in seconds at any time of year.
What it genuinely fixes:
- Swirl marks and wash scratches from sponges, brushes and drying towels
- Fingernail marks around door handles
- Light scuffs from bags, jackets and car park brushes
What it does not fix:
- Anything that cuts through the film — a deep key scratch is permanent damage to the film, and the film then needs replacing
- Impact damage where the film itself has been torn or punctured
- Staining that has been left to sit — bird droppings and tree sap should still be removed promptly, even on PPF
Note: self-healing is a property of TPU films. Budget PVC films do not self-heal — they protect against chips, but wash swirls stay. That is the single biggest practical difference between the two material families, and it is covered in the next section.
4. TPU vs PVC: what the film is made of
Almost every film on the market is one of two materials. The price gap between them is real, and so is the performance gap — but PVC is not a scam, it is simply a different trade-off.

5. What paint protection film protects against — and what it doesn’t
PPF handles well:
- Stone chips and road debris — the reason most people buy it, and the damage that is most expensive to put right properly
- Sand, grit and winter salt blasting the leading edges at motorway speed
- Bug splatter and bird droppings, which are acidic and will etch an unprotected clear coat within days in summer heat
- Wash swirls and light scratches — on self-healing TPU film these come back out
- UV fading and oxidation, particularly on red and dark colours
- Everyday contact damage — supermarket trolleys, kerbside bushes, loading a bike over the rear bumper, scuffs on the door sills
PPF does not handle:
- Dents and bodywork damage — the panel deforms regardless of what is on top of it
- Deep, deliberate scratches that cut clean through the film into the paint
- Rust or existing damage underneath — film goes over what is there, it does not repair it
- Neglect — film still needs washing, and chemical stains still need removing promptly
One area people forget entirely: the parts of a car that get damaged by use rather than by the road — boot sills scratched by luggage, door sills scuffed by shoes, the cups behind door handles. 6. The two ways PPF gets installed: bulk vs pre-cut
This is the decision that determines what you pay, how long the car is off the road, and how good the result looks — and it is the part most “what is PPF” articles skip. There are two routes to the same film on the same car, and they are genuinely different products to buy.
1. Bulk installation
The film arrives at the shop as a roll, typically 1.52 m wide. The installer cuts an oversized piece, wets the panel and the film with slip solution, lays it on, works it into the curves with heat and squeegees, and trims the excess.
Where the skill sits: a bumper is a compound curve — it bends in two directions at once — and flat film does not want to lie on it. Getting a wrinkle-free result means stretching the film exactly the right amount in exactly the right places. That is a craft, and a good bulk installer is worth what they charge.
What it involves in practice:
- A clean, dust-controlled indoor bay, and often several days of it
- Frequently removing badges, lights, handles, mirror caps or the whole bumper so edges can be wrapped out of sight
- Trimming — this is the part to ask your installer about. Trimming on the car with a blade is fast, but one slip scores the clear coat. Careful shops either trim off the car, use blade-safe tape, or work from plotter-cut patterns
Worth knowing: “bulk” describes how the film is supplied — off a roll — not necessarily how it is cut. Plenty of good professional shops buy bulk film and then plotter-cut patterns from their own software library. The question that actually matters when you get a quote is: “will a blade touch my paint?”
2. Pre-cut kits
A pre-cut kit — a paint protection film kit cut to your exact model before it reaches your car — is the same film you would get off the roll. At PPF-Kits, each pattern is generated from a metrology-grade 3D scan of the real vehicle, flattened into a stretch-compensated 2D shape, given edge-wrap allowance, plotted and weeded — the excess, unused material around every piece is removed for you — then shipped with a layout sheet showing where each piece goes.
That weeding step saves more time than most people expect, and it is one of the biggest practical advantages of our kits. Nothing has to be picked apart when the package arrives: you prepare the car once, then work through the pieces one after another, panel by panel, without stopping to weed film in between.
What actually arrives: the pattern plotted, the excess film already removed, only the pieces your car needs.
- No blade near your paint — the trimming already happened, on a plotter
- Cut for your exact model — you are not guessing at coverage or cutting your way to a fit. Shaping it into the curves is still your job
- Pre-weeded and ready to install — open the tube, prepare the car, start
- Repeatable — the 1st kit and the 10,000th are identical
- Buy panel by panel — just the bumper, or just the mirrors, rather than an all-or-nothing package
Pre-cut does not mean the film lays itself down. You still work from anchor points and stretch the material outwards until it sits perfectly everywhere — that is the craft, and there is no pattern that removes it.
What the pattern gives you is the certainty that it can sit perfectly. The kit will fit 100 %; whether it does on the day comes down to installation temperature, technique and practice. Work warm, work clean, take your time.
Not just a DIY product
A large share of our customers are professional shops — including shops that own a cutting plotter themselves. The plotter is rarely the bottleneck. Two other things are.
The first is pattern access. A cutting-software subscription only covers the cars in that library. Which is why a lot of professional installers hold two or three subscriptions at the same time, purely to reach every model that might come through the door — and still run into gaps when a car is brand new. We scan new models as they launch, so in most cases the pattern exists within days of release. If the car you need is missing, just tell us and we will add it as soon as we possibly can.
The second is capacity. Even with the pattern in hand, someone still has to plot it, weed it and prepare the job for every single customer. So either the shop or the car owner orders exactly the parts needed, and when the package arrives it is ready to install. No pattern hunting, no plotting, no weeding — the shop spends its time on the part it gets paid for. If a model is not listed, this is how to ask us for it.

The fit of a pre-cut kit lives or dies on the quality of that pattern, and there is a lot more to it than running a car through a scanner. You will occasionally see generic, non-model-specific film offered for a few small areas — door handle cups or a luggage-area strip, where one shape covers many cars well enough. That is a sensible use of universal material. For actual body panels it is not a realistic route: the shape either matches your car or it does not.

7. How much of the car to cover
Full-car coverage is the maximum, not the default. Damage on a car is not evenly distributed — the front third collects the overwhelming majority of it, which is why most sensible PPF budgets start there and work outwards.
- Partial front — front bumper, a strip along the leading edge of the bonnet and front wings, mirror caps. Cheapest meaningful protection; the visible film line across the bonnet is the trade-off.
- Full front — the whole bumper, the whole bonnet, full front wings, mirrors and headlights. No film line on the bonnet, and it covers essentially everything the road throws forwards. This is the most common choice.
- High-impact extras — side skirts and the area behind the rear wheels (where your own tyres sandblast the paint), A-pillars and the front edge of the roof, the rear bumper top where luggage is dragged over it.
- Full car — every painted panel. The premium option, and the one that makes the strongest case on cars with expensive or delicate paint.
- Small, cheap, high-value pieces — door sills, the boot sill, door handle cups. These take daily abuse and cost very little to protect.
Coverage is something you assemble part by part — and individual pieces can be modified, from logo cutouts to PDC sensor holes.

8. What PPF costs
Three things drive the price: how much of the car you cover, which film you choose, and who installs it. The third one is usually the largest single item on a professional quote — on most jobs, labour costs more than the film.
Professional installation
Indicative European ranges, useful as a sanity check on a quote rather than as a price list:
- Partial front: roughly €600–1,200
- Full front: roughly €1,300–2,500
- Full car: roughly €4,000–7,000 — and there is no real ceiling. We have seen quotes of up to €15,000 for full-car coverage on exotic, complex cars, where the panels are intricate and every edge has to be wrapped.
Those numbers move a long way depending on things that have nothing to do with your car:
- Which country you are in. Labour rates across Europe differ by a factor of several, and so do the quotes.
- How much competition there is locally. A shop with ten rivals in the same city prices differently from the only specialist within 200 km.
- How busy that shop is. A full order book and a quiet month produce very different numbers for the same work.
- The season. Spring and early summer are peak PPF season nearly everywhere.
- The distance and the downtime. In many regions the nearest specialist is a long drive away, and a full front or full car often means leaving your car there for several days. That is a real cost too, even if it never appears on the invoice.
Doing it yourself with a pre-cut kit
The film is the same film. What you are not paying for is the labour and the pattern work. Two things to read out of that table. First, coverage is granular: door handles and sills cost less than a tank of fuel, while the big front panels are where the money sits — which is exactly where the damage is too. Second, the film choice moves the total more than anything else you decide. The same full-front package is a different product in Oraguard 270 than in Avery Dennison SPF-X3, and both are legitimate choices depending on how long you intend to keep the car.
Prices differ per model — a Ferrari pattern is not a Corolla pattern — but the relationship holds: on this car a full-front DIY package runs from about €447 in the entry-level film to just over €1,095 in the most premium TPU, against roughly €1,300–2,500 for the same coverage installed professionally. A squeegee, spray bottle and layout sheet come in the tube with every kit, so there is nothing else you strictly need to buy.
9. Paint protection film vs ceramic coating vs vinyl wrap
These three get compared constantly, usually by people selling one of them. They are not competitors — they do different jobs, and the thickness figures alone tell most of the story.

The short version: if your concern is stone chips and physical damage, only PPF addresses it. If your concern is gloss, chemical resistance and easier washing, that is what a coating is for. If you want a different colour, that is a wrap. They are answers to different questions, and a good film already brings a hydrophobic, UV-stable top coat of its own.
One practical rule if your car is already coated or waxed: PPF will not adhere properly to a ceramic-coated or freshly waxed surface. Any panel that is getting film needs to be properly decontaminated and the coating removed first — plan that into the job rather than discovering it on the day.
10. Gloss, matte and coloured film
PPF is no longer only a clear product:
- Gloss / high gloss — the default. Applied over factory paint it is designed to be as close to invisible as possible; edges may be faintly visible up close if you go looking for them.
- Matte — turns glossy factory paint into a satin or matte finish while protecting it. This is a genuine styling change, achieved without repainting and fully reversible. We supply matte film in both PVC and TPU.
- Coloured — a colour change plus protection in one film. We do not sell coloured PPF yet, and it is worth understanding why it is rarely a pre-cut product: to change a car’s colour convincingly, the film has to be wrapped around every single edge so that none of the original paint shows anywhere. That usually means disassembling panels and parts — handles, lights, trim, sometimes the whole bumper — which is a bulk installation job by nature.
Two practical points people learn the hard way:
- Plan matte panel by panel. A matte bonnet next to glossy wings is very visible. Matte finishes are best taken to a natural panel boundary — or applied to the whole car.
- Matte cannot be polished. Any attempt to polish a mark out of a matte surface leaves a shiny patch. Wash it, do not correct it.
Yes, matte and coloured film is removable — exactly like clear film. Warm it, lift a corner and peel it back slowly at roughly a 45–90° angle, then clean off any residue. That reversibility is precisely what makes a matte PPF a lower-risk way to restyle a car than a respray.
11. How long PPF lasts — and how it comes off
Typical service life is 5–12 years, depending on the film and the conditions. Budget PVC films sit at the lower end with 5-year warranties; premium TPU films carry 9–10-year warranties and are engineered to resist yellowing for that whole period.
What shortens it: constant intense sun and heat, harsh chemicals, automated brush washes, and high-pressure water aimed directly at the film edges from close range. Everything else is ordinary care — wash it like paint.
Removal
PPF is designed to come off. Warm the film gently with a hair dryer or heat gun, lift a corner, and pull it back slowly at roughly a 45–90° angle. Any adhesive residue comes off with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated adhesive remover.
On intact factory paint in good condition, quality film removes cleanly — that is the entire premise of a sacrificial layer. The genuine risk cases are worth naming honestly: panels that have been resprayed (aftermarket paint is not always as well bonded as factory paint), stone chips that were already there before the film went on, and very old, brittle film left far beyond its service life, which tears into small pieces and turns a one-hour job into an afternoon.
Can damaged film be repaired?
Damaged film is replaced, not patched. A torn or deeply scratched piece cannot be repaired invisibly — a patch always shows an edge. The film comes off that panel and a new piece goes on, which is exactly why panel-level coverage matters: with a pre-cut kit you re-order the affected part on its own instead of redoing the car.

12. Is PPF worth it?
It depends on the car and on you, and anyone who answers otherwise is selling something. The honest version:
PPF makes a strong case when:
- The car is new or nearly new, and the paint is still perfect — film preserves a condition, it does not restore one
- You cover motorway miles, which is where stone chips actually happen
- The paint is dark, red, or a soft premium finish that shows every mark
- The car is leased and you cover real mileage — isolated stone chips usually fall under fair wear and tear, but concentrated chipping, chips that go through to primer and scuffed bumpers are chargeable, and a front-end kit costs less than one recharged panel
- You care about resale value, or the model holds its value well
- Repainting that particular car is expensive — many EVs, anything with a multi-layer or matte factory finish
PPF makes a weaker case when:
- The paint is already chipped — the film seals the existing damage in rather than fixing it. Proper paint correction first, film afterwards, or accept what is there
- The car is garaged and barely driven
- You are selling within a year and would not recoup it
If you land on the first list, the next two decisions are the ones covered above: which film (TPU or PVC, gloss or matte), and which route (bulk installation or a pre-cut kit). Neither answer is universal — but both are easier to get right once you know what the film is actually doing.

- PPF — Paint Protection Film.

- Mil / micron — thickness units. 1 mil = 25.4 µm, so a 160 µm film is about 6.3 mil.

- Weeding / pre-weeded — removing the excess film around the pattern so only the pieces you need remain on the backing.
- Edge wrap — extra film designed into the pattern so it tucks around a panel edge instead of stopping on the visible face.
- Slip solution — soapy water that lets you slide the film into position before the adhesive grabs.
- Tack solution — alcohol-based liquid used to make an edge grip immediately.
- Compound curve — a surface curving in two directions at once, such as a bumper corner; the reason flat film needs a specially shaped pattern and has to be stretched during installation.
- Anchor point — the spot you fix first and work outwards from, stretching the film into the curve as you go.
- Clear bra — US term for PPF, usually meaning partial front coverage.

What does PPF stand for?
The full form of PPF is Paint Protection Film, and that is all the abbreviation means — a clear, flexible film applied over a car’s paint to absorb stone chips, scratches and chemical damage. Most films are thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), but PPF is also made from PVC and other materials. What differs between products is the material and the installation method, not the meaning of the name.
How does PPF work?
It works as a sacrificial layer. The elastic TPU core spreads the energy of an impact sideways over a wide area instead of letting it concentrate on one point of your clear coat, while the top coat handles UV, chemicals and light scratching. When the film is eventually worn out, it is removed and replaced — the paint underneath is untouched.
How thick is PPF in mm?
The films we supply are 157–160 µm, which is about 0.16 mm or roughly 6.3 mil. For comparison, a car’s factory clear coat is typically 40–50 µm.
Does PPF really self-heal?
TPU films genuinely do, for marks that stay within the top coat: swirl marks, wash scratches, fingernail marks around door handles. Warmth from the sun, warm water or a hair dryer restores the surface. Anything that cuts through the film is permanent damage to the film. Budget PVC films do not self-heal at all.
What is the difference between bulk installation and a pre-cut kit?
Bulk means the film comes off a roll and is shaped and trimmed for the job, usually on the car — fast in skilled hands, but a blade near your paint. A pre-cut kit is the same film already cut to your exact model from a 3D scan, so nothing is trimmed on the vehicle and the shape is solved before the film reaches the car. Laying it down well still takes patience and technique — the pattern removes the cutting, not the craft.
Can I install a pre-cut PPF kit myself?
Yes, if you are patient and work clean. The pieces are pre-cut and pre-weeded, so you can prepare the car once and then install piece after piece, and there is no cutting on the car. You do still have to work the film from anchor points and stretch it into the curves — the kit fits 100 %, but getting it there depends on installation temperature, technique and practice. Start with a small part such as a mirror or door sill, follow the installation instructions, and give yourself unhurried time in a dust-free space.
Do professional installers use pre-cut kits too?
Many do, including shops that own a cutting plotter. The plotter is rarely the bottleneck — pattern access and capacity are. A cutting-software subscription only covers the cars in that library, so installers often hold several subscriptions at once and still hit gaps on newly released models. Either the shop or the car owner orders exactly the parts needed, and the package arrives pre-cut and pre-weeded, ready to install — no plotting, no weeding, no pattern hunting.
My car was only just released — will you have a pattern for it?
Most likely, and quickly. We scan new models as they launch, so in most cases the pattern exists within days of a car’s release. If yours is not in the catalogue yet, tell us and we will add it as soon as we possibly can.
How long does PPF last?
Typically 5–12 years. Budget PVC films carry 5-year warranties; premium TPU films carry 9–10 years. Climate, mileage and care all move the real figure within that range.
Can PPF be repaired if it gets damaged?
Not invisibly — damaged film is replaced rather than patched, because a patch always shows an edge. The piece is removed from that panel and a new one goes on. With a pre-cut kit you can re-order just the affected part instead of redoing the whole car.
Can PPF be removed, and does removing it damage the paint?
It is designed to be removed: warm the film, then peel it back slowly at a 45–90° angle and clean any residue with isopropyl alcohol. On intact factory paint, quality film comes off cleanly. The genuine risk cases are resprayed panels, paint that was already chipped before the film went on, and very old brittle film left far past its service life.
Is matte or coloured PPF removable too?
Yes — matte and coloured films remove exactly like clear film. That reversibility is what makes matte PPF a lower-risk way to restyle a car than a respray. Note that we currently supply matte film but not coloured film: a full colour change requires wrapping the film around every edge so no original paint shows, which usually means disassembling panels and is therefore a bulk installation job rather than a pre-cut one.
PPF or ceramic coating — which should I get?
They solve different problems. A ceramic coating is 1–3 µm thick and offers no stone-chip protection at all; it delivers gloss, chemical resistance and easy cleaning. PPF is around 160 µm and absorbs impacts. Choose based on what you are actually trying to prevent. One practical point: PPF will not adhere properly to a ceramic-coated or freshly waxed surface, so those panels have to be decontaminated first.
How much does PPF cost?
Professionally installed in Europe, expect roughly €600–1,200 for a partial front, €1,300–2,500 for a full front and €4,000–7,000 for a full car — with quotes reaching €15,000 on exotic, complex cars. Which country you are in, local competition, how busy the shop is and the season all move the number — and in some regions the nearest specialist is a long drive away and will keep the car for several days. A DIY pre-cut kit removes the labour and pattern cost: for a Tesla Model Y (Juniper) Standard 2026, door handles start at €24 and a bumper + headlamp set is €188 in our entry-level film.
Is PPF worth it on a used car that already has stone chips?
Be honest with yourself about what film does: it preserves the condition underneath, it does not repair it. Applied over existing chips it seals them in and they stay visible. Either have the paint corrected first, or accept the current state and protect it from getting worse.
Do I need to remove parts of the car to fit PPF?
With bulk installation, often yes — badges, lights, handles or a whole bumper get removed so edges can be wrapped out of sight. Our pre-cut patterns are specifically designed so that no body parts need to come off.
